Awareness In Action: Justice with Valerie Brown (Part 5 – April)
Upaya Zen Center's Dharma Podcast - Un podcast de Joan Halifax | Zen Buddhist Teacher Upaya Abbot

In this session of the Awareness in Action series, Valerie Brown passionately meets us at the crossroads of spiritual practice and social action. As democracy trembles and DEI programs face systematic dismantling, Brown draws us in close to presence and practice. Sharing stories from her transformation as Capitol Hill lobbyist into spiritual teacher, Brown describes how she moved from an adversarial stance to one of deep curiosity. “My objective was no longer to influence, persuade, or win an argument. I realized that’s way too small. That’s meager. My objective was really to be faithful to my vow of treating each person with respect and dignity, to foster understanding.” Brown continues, “When we have a society where we welcome diverse people and diverse ideas by extension, we create an environment in which all people are treated fairly, in which everyone’s rights are upheld with dignity. That is called social justice.” In this grounded and timely talk, we are encouraged to not merely witness from the sidelines but to embody our own transformative presence—creating “a culture of belonging without othering” that honors both the urgency of our current political climate and the peace we seek to establish and embody.
