There was no World War III this week, but we had a scare. How close did NATO come to an escalation with Russia? A Russian-made missile landed on a Polish farming village on Tuesday, killing two agricultural workers. The Polish president found that initial evidence pointed to the Ukrainian anti-air defence, a claim backed by NATO allies but initially denied by the Ukrainian president, who stated "I have no doubt that this is not our missile." By Thursday, he was gently rolling back that claim from "we didn't do it" to "we don't know". When the missile fell in Poland, G20 leaders were smack in the middle of a G20 summit in Bali. That sparked an impromptu crisis meeting of the G20's NATO members.
