In this podcast, we have an exciting conversation with Dr. Stephen V. Peters, who has been in public education for 20 years. He has been a middle school teacher, assistant principal, school principal and school leadership coach. He has recently completed a dissertation on Black fathers and the role their own learning experiences have shaped the ways they engage in the learning lives of their children. Dr. Peters discusses his research on how Black men embodied values of Black male fatherhood, their academic worldviews, and responsive forms of learning engagement as key roles, which informed their function in the learning lives of their children. Additionally, we discuss the implications of high-risk schools, black fathers and stereotypes, and the practices that Black fathers enact in order to support the learning and achievement of their children in schools. Highlights from this episode include: ● The factors that determine how a school is considered high risk.  ● Discussion on how Black fathers are strategically involved in their children’s learning   despite the stereotypes that say otherwise. ● How Black men shaped their view of values of fathering and beliefs in learning from their father/father figure. ● A discussion of how the criminal justice systems affect Black fathers’ involvement in their children learning. ● We also discuss how Dr. Peter's research has implications for district leaders and principals. *********************************************************************************************************************************** The Equity Experience Podcast is brought to you by Dr. Karla Manning, Founder & President of The Equity Leadership Group, LLC.   We help K-12 school leaders and educators create culturally responsive classrooms and schools with our diversity, equity, and inclusion consulting services.
