Apparently Richard is a very old dramatic name. It is pronounced slightly differently back then. I can't speak German, so I'm not going to try to do it. But in the 1800s, though, apparently they would shorten things for the purposes of writing them down. Yeah, remember those days you use a pen and a pencil? Not even a pen back there....
