Courage Under Fire | OMAR “CRISPY” AVILA

Order of Man - Un podcast de Ryan Michler

What does it take to exhibit extreme courage under fire? I wish I could tell you there was an exact formula for performing well under life and death pressure but there isn’t. But what I can tell you is that my guest today, Omar ‘Crispy’ Avila is a man who has done just that. When in Iraq, his vehicle was hit by an IED sending it six feet in the air. I’m not going to ruin the story by telling you about the resulting fallout and how Crispy conducted himself but I will say you’re not going to want to miss it. We also talk about using humor as a way to calm a situation, overcoming survivor’s guilt, how to train properly for unknown events, and how every man can learn to develop courage under fire. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Serving your community Letting your guard down Making light of a situation Comedy as therapy Joining the infantry Moving forward in life Laying down fire Extended deployment Losing faith in God Keeping your composure The Green Zone Flying into Germany Focus under chaos Survivors guilt The recovery process Finding inner peace OMAR ‘CRISPY’ AVILA My guest today is Omar ‘Crispy’ Avila and he is a retired army combat veteran. But more than that he is someone who is extremely influential in the veteran community and has used his unfortunate circumstances to lift and inspire millions of people across the planet. He sustained catastrophic damage to his body when his vehicle was hit with an IED and survived over 75% of his body burned and been rendered nearly blind. I had the opportunity to meet him at SHOT Show several months ago and invited him to join us on the podcast because I have always been inspired by how he lives his life, uses humor with the Black Rifle Coffee Company team to inspire, and the kind of man he is. PRIORITIZE AND EXECUTE If you’re anything like me, it’s easy for you to fall into the trap of consumption. I mean, you’re listening to this podcast right now which can be beneficial but if you never apply any of what you learn, is it even useful? This is the trap of the self-development space – consumption without production. But in the Iron Council for the month of May, we’re talking about prioritizing the information you have and the objectives you’ve identified for yourself and putting them into action. It’s about unpacking what you want to accomplish in your health, relationships, business, and life, identifying the “order of operations,” and putting in the work required to make it happen. If you fall into “paralysis by analysis,” and often consume more than you produce, this is the month for you to band with 530 like-minded men who will help you accomplish more in the next 90 days than you ever have in a year.
