What is Eternal Life (John 17:3)?

Is eternal life having a physical existence forever?  Or, does it involve an eternal spiritual existence?  What must we do to inherit eternal life?   Any significant world events will be discussed based on Luke 21:34-36 and 1 Thessalonians 5:1-8.
