The End of the Beginning: The Anointing

Welcome Graham fam! We are so glad you could watch Sunday morning online with us. The End of the Beginning – 1 – The Anointing Lent has begun. Easter is just 6 weeks away and we are starting a new series that will lead up to Easter Sunday. Our new series is called The End of the Beginning. Over the next 6 weeks we will be focusing on some of the major events leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus.This is very much the end of the begging. This is the culmination of all the OT Law being fulfilled to completion and that initial era coming to an end.Today we will be in the Gospel of John and will look at the story of Jesus being anointed at Bethany. Never ignore the importance of anointing. Everyone that God ever has called and ever will call will have a special anointing from the Lord and that is revealed in various different ways. Jesus is about to bring the OT Law (or the Law of Moses) to an end. He is going to fulfill it, complete it, and usher in a brand-new time on the earth. So, let’s read together and talk about the importance of Jesus being anointed to bring about the end of the beginning. Scripture: John 12:1-8 Points:1. The Old Covenant was coming to an end!– Luke 22:202. Mary knew something that no one else did!– Jeremiah 29:12-133. Preparation was taking place! Ending: Please notice that the disciples just didn’t get it. They didn’t understand the physical preparation nor the spiritual preparation. It totally went over their heads! No matter how many times Jesus told them he would die, that he would be resurrected, that all of this was God’s plan, they still just didn’t get it.You need to know that it is absolutely possible to be right with Jesus, to have spent significant amounts of time with him, and to hear his voice and yet still not be blinded to his purpose, his plan, his will, and the ultimate goal of his kingdom. His disciples were. It is very much possible for us to be as well. We have to be humble. Remember, the disciples were always fighting over who was the leader, who would be next in line to Jesus, who would be 2nd in command. Mary just wanted to honor him. Mary just wanted to serve him.And it was Mary that was helping usher in the very plan of God while the disciples would struggle greatly in the coming days. Which one do you want to be like? – Luke 12:47 It takes submission, it takes humility, and it takes sacrifice if you want to be like Mary.
