Dealing With Sin 4: The Right One and the Right Time

Welcome Graham fam! We are so glad you could watch Sunday morning online with us. Last week we talked about the reach of our sin and how our sin affects so many others and at the same time we are affected by other’s sin.  And in those times where we are innocently affected by other’s sin there is a cry in our hearts for justice.  We want God to bring justice to our situations.  We see things in the world that we want God to rectify and make right and perhaps one of the most frustrating things about putting our faith in God is being patient enough to allow him to make things right in his own time and manner! This story of David is no different.  David’s had sinned.  He had successfully covered it up in the eyes of men.  He had taken Bathsheba as his wife and was living as if nothing had ever happened. Obviously, there were people who knew about the whole situation, but it was their duty to be loyal and faithful to the king and not to appose him.  It was not their responsibility to hold the king accountable, but to serve him despite his faults.  So, who is the person? God decides who the right one is and when the right time is!  When we pick up in 2 Samuel 12 today, somewhere around a year has passed.  Some scholars say a little under a year, and some say maybe a little over a year.  It is really hard to tell because the Hebrew people did not keep Chronological records in the same ways as we do.  But a significant amount of time has passed, and David has been left to deal with the guilt of his sin on his own!  And then one day, at the right time, God sends the right man to come and confront David’s sin. Scripture: 2 Samuel 12:1-9 Nathan Rebukes David 12 So the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to tell David this story: “There were two men in a certain town. One was rich, and one was poor. 2 The rich man owned a great many sheep and cattle. 3 The poor man owned nothing but one little lamb he had bought. He raised that little lamb, and it grew up with his children. It ate from the man’s own plate and drank from his cup. He cuddled it in his arms like a baby daughter. 4 One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing an animal from his own flock or herd, he took the poor man’s lamb and killed it and prepared it for his guest.” 5 David was furious. “As surely as the Lord lives,” he vowed, “any man who would do such a thing deserves to die! 6 He must repay four lambs to the poor man for the one he stole and for having no pity.” 7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man! The Lord, the God of Israel, says: I anointed you king of Israel and saved you from the power of Saul. 8 I gave you your master’s house and his wives and the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And if that had not been enough, I would have given you much, much more. 9 Why, then, have you despised the word of the Lord and done this horrible deed? For you have murdered Uriah the Hittite with the sword of the Ammonites and stolen his wife. Points: God has ordained a person and a time!   There is a temptation for us to confront!   We will be judged in the manner that we judge others!
