What is 'Modern' about Modern Greece?

Was the crisis a result of it somehow being less ‘modern’ than previously thought? But what is ‘modern’ in this context? This question is especially acute given that Europe today is said to be experiencing its own existential crisis. If Greece has not followed such modernity, what has been its trajectory and why? The answers to these questions go well beyond issues of economics.
