More than 36,000 people have been killed and tens of thousands injured by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria one week ago. There’s anger at the pace of rescue and aid, especially in Syria, already ravaged by the civil war – President Bashar al Assad is accused of limiting humanitarian efforts in areas that were already devastated by Syrian and Russian bombings. Of course, Russia has been focusing its own firepower on Ukraine more recently, also striking critical infrastructure in that country. Indeed, more than 65,000 war crimes have been reported in Ukraine, with the western alliance committing to investigations and accountability.
