“And then there is the river. I am convinced that river is what I touched that night at that Wall. It is the river of pain and love. It is the river of all the children’s cries. It is the river of the arms that ache to hug just one more time. It is the river of the lives that should have been. It is the river flowing over a way that with tears has been watered. It is the river through which we have come treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered. It is the river of all our efforts that seem like they amounted to nothing. The river of all the sweat poured out of us as we cried, “how long, O Lord?” It is the river that feeds the tree with leaves of healing.
