A new documentary follows director Andy Señor Jr. as he heads to Cuba to head up a production of the musical “Rent,” the country’s first Broadway musical produced by an American company in more than 50 years. Señor Jr. and co-director Victor Patrick Alvarez join us to discuss the documentary, “Revolution Rent” which premieres on HBO on June 15 at 9 pm, and will be available to stream on HBO Max starting June 16. [REBROADCAST FROM MARCH 14, 2019] Kurtis Blow, the first rapper to sign on to a major record label, and Rocky Bucano, a former DJ and producer at Strong City Records, joins us to discuss the creation of the Universal Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx. Kurtis Blow serves as chairman of the museum's board and Rocky Bucano is the museum's executive director. Scheduled to open in 2023, the museum will celebrate and preserve the history of local and global hip-hop music and culture.   The Museum of New York City’s new exhibition New York, New Music 1980-1986 opened on June 11th, highlighting the diverse musical artists of the decade and exploring the broader music and cultural scene centered in New York City. Photographer Janette Beckman and the Museum’s curator of photographs and prints Sean Corcoran join us to discuss the new exhibition.
