Atticus Lish's New Book, Caretaking Expert Amy Goyer, Karen Dalton Documentary, A New Jasper Johns Exhibit

The new novel from PEN/Faulkner winner Atticus Lish tells the story of a young man thrust into a caretaker role when his mother learns she has ALS… and his absent father returns to their lives with suspect motivations. Lish joins us to discuss his novel, The War for Gloria, which is based in part on his own experience caring for a mother with ALS. [REBROADCAST FROM August 31, 2021] Actor and filmmaker Jay Duplass joins us to discuss the new documentary film, "Not Going Quietly," from Duplass Brothers Productions, his production company with his brother Mark. The film documents the life and work of activist Ady Barkan after being diagnosed with ALS.  To round out our caretaking hour, we speak with AARP’s caregiving expert and columnist Amy Goyer, who will take calls from listeners and provide advice for how to best take care of yourself, while taking care of others. Karen Dalton was a fixture of the 1960s Greenwich Village folk scene and shared the stage with Bob Dylan. But because she released only two albums and died at the age of 55, her legacy has been obscured relative to her peers. The new documentary, “Karen Dalton: In My Own Time,” attempts to shine a light on her life and career, through rediscovered material, footage, and journals, and interviews with artists like Nick Cave and Vanessa Carlton who were influenced by Dalton. Filmmakers Robert Yapkowitz and Richard Peete join us to discuss.  Scott Rothkopf, Senior Deputy Director of The Whitney Museum of Art, and Carlos Basualdo, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, join us to preview a new exhibit, "Jasper Johns: Mind/Mirror," which features over 500 pieces by celebrated American artist Jasper Johns, some of which will be shown in public for the first time.
