Angélique Kidjo, a Black History Walking Tour of the Lower East Side, Juneteenth Events, Georgia Anne Muldrow

On June 18, Angélique Kidjo will release Mother Nature, her first album of original songs in 7 years. The album also celebrates and features a new generation of musicians from Africa and the African diaspora, including Burna Boy, Mr. Eazi, EARTHGANG, and Sampa The Great. Kidjo joins us for a Listening Party and previews songs from the album. A new walking tour from the Tenement Museum sheds light on the history of Black New Yorkers in the Lower East Side. Lauren O’Brien, historian and lead scholar for the walking tour, and Kathryn Lloyd, director of programs and education, join us to discuss the tour, called Reclaiming Black Spaces. 6sqft editor Dana Schulz joins us to discuss her recent article, "19 ways to celebrate Juneteenth in New York City." VWETO III is the third installment in a series of instrumental albums from Georgia Anne Muldrow, a songwriter and producer whose career has often explored social justice and the sounds of the African diaspora. In 2008, she released a song with Erykah Badu that popularized the term “stay woke.” Last year, she released the album Mama, You Can Bet! under the name Jyoti, considered by many critics as one of the best of the year. Muldrow joins us for a Listening Party for her new record, which she says is “intended for movement.”
