In conversation with Ms Patience Mungwari “The pandemic has travelled along the fault lines of social injustice to really expose some of the weaknesses in our governance systems”.  This conversation discusses the impact of Covid-19 and concomitant government regulations on skyrocketing cases of gender-based violence. Ms Patience Mungwari talks about the challenges women from different walks of life such as migrant and rural women face, as a result of government regulations in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19. This episode discusses the conflicting nature of government policies and their implementation following lockdowns. In this discussion, she also highlights weaknesses in the system and provides solutions to address the plight of women. She calls for a gendered analysis in implementing policies as well as for inclusive participation from all stakeholders to reduce the effects of the pandemic on women during and post lock down. Ms Patience Mungwari is a Project Manager for the Women’s Right Unit at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. She has expert knowledge of gender related issues and women’s rights in particular. She also has considerable experience in advocacy, training and facilitation to promote the implementation and popularisation of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol) through research, training and advocacy.  Report abuse if you are experiencing gender- based violence or you if know of someone who is.
