Kidnapping is an increasing threat for people in South Africa. The number of cases has more than doubled over the past decade and 2000 incidents were reported in the last year. Initially, criminal gangs were targeting wealthy business people – they were often snatched close to their businesses or homes. But more recently, they have become indiscriminate – going after anyone with the means to pay a ransom. South Africa’s police have said they need to double their efforts to stop these gangs.
